چکیده

Ferulate polysaccharide esters in grasses enter into free-radical condensation reactions in the cell wall. By radical dimerisation of ferulates, polysaccharide–polysaccharide cross-linking is eþ ected. A range of diferulate isomers are produced, not solely the 5-5o-coupled dimer which has been quantiüed historically. Both ferulates and diferulates enter ligniücation reactions and become intimately bound up with the lignin complex. Again, under-quantiücation is signiücant since it is not possible to release ferulate or diferulates from some of the structures. Overall, ferulates play a signiücant role in cell wall development and impact polysaccharide utilisation in grasses. 1999 Society of Chemical Industry (

Reactions of dehydrodiferulates with ammonia.

Lignocellulosic materials derived from forages and agricultural residues are potential sustainable resources for production of bioethanol or other liquid biofuels. However, the natural recalcitrance of such materials to enzymatic hydrolysis is a major obstacle in their efficient utilization. In grasses, much of the recalcitrance is associated with ferulate cross-linking in the cell wall, i.e., ...

Structural elucidation of new ferulic acid-containing phenolic dimers and trimers isolated from maize bran

Four new phenolic dimers and trimers that contain ferulic acid moieties were isolated from the alkaline hydrolyzate of insoluble maize bran fiber and their structures were established by 1D/2D NMR and mass spectrometry. The biological role of one dimer remains unclear whereas the dimeric vanillin-ferulic acid-cross-product probably represents an oxidative degradation product from the correspond...

Profiling of diferulates (plant cell wall cross-linkers) using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Recalcitrance of grasses to enzymatic digestion arises to a significant degree from a complex array of phenolic crosslinks between cell wall polysaccharide chains that inhibit their conversion to biofuels and lower their nutritive value for animal feed applications. Polysaccharide esters of ferulic acid are abundant in plant cell walls. Crosslinks between polysaccharides are formed through oxid...

Ferulate Cross-linking in Cell Walls Isolated from Maize Cell Suspensions

-Cross-linking of arabinoxylans by ferulate dehydrodimers and incorporation of feruloylated arabinoxylans into lignin were modelled with maize walls (Zea mays cv Black Mexican) containing 5.3-18.0 mg g~ of total ferulates. The proportion of dehydrodimers to total ferulates increased from ca 20 to 45% when dilute hydrogen peroxide was added to walls containing bound peroxidase. About 45% of the ...

Targeting expression of a fungal ferulic acid esterase to the apoplast, endoplasmic reticulum or golgi can disrupt feruloylation of the growing cell wall and increase the biodegradability of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea).

In the cell walls of grasses, ferulic acid is esterified to arabinoxylans and undergoes oxidative reactions to form ferulates dimers, trimers and oligomers. Feruloylation of arabinoxylan is considered important not only because it leads to cross-linked xylans but also because ferulates may act as a nucleating site for the formation of lignin and hence link arabinoxylans to lignin by forming a l...
